Once upon a time we were spontaneous people. And then we had kids. That completely wiped out just about all of that. Don’t get me wrong. I would not trade it for anything different, but it is very easy to let life sweep you up. Creating free (or inexpensive) stay at home date nights has allowed us to reconnect with each other without breaking our budget.
The best part is that these are ideas that are fun and, most importantly, easy to pull off with minimal planning. We are fortunate that we have family members that are more than happy to have the kids spend the night here and there, but a lot of times we find things to do together after the kids have gone to bed. Some of our date nights are only an hour long (or sometimes less), but even that short amount of time together can be refreshing.
Stay at home date nights:
1. Netflix and Chill
You really cannot get much easier than this. Pick a movie or a show that you both agree on (that can sometimes be a challenge!) and cuddle up on the couch together. Make sure you put away your phones so you won’t be tempted to get distracted.
2. Make Dinner Together
Put the kids to bed and make dinner together. Sit down at the table together and have a conversation. You know, kind of like what you used to be able to do before you were chasing a toddler to come back to sit down to eat or wiping up the spilled cup of juice (for the second time).
3. Play a Board Game or Cards
Dust off your favorite board game or get out the deck of cards and
Pretty simple, right? Just have a conversation with each other. Talk about your dreams, hopes for the future, funny stories from your childhood, or even reminisce about fun times you have had together.
5. Have a Picnic
Grab a bottle of wine and some cheese or even a bag of chips and some soda, spread out a blanket in the backyard and enjoy some time together.
Head out to the backyard, spread a blanket out on the ground, and try to spot out the different constellations. There are even some really cool apps that you can use on your phone to help you navigate your way among the stars.
7. Write a Letter to Each Other
Take some time beforehand and write a letter to each other. Talk about the reasons why you appreciate your partner or the reasons why you fell in love.
8. Play 20 Questions
Write down a list of questions that you have always wanted to ask your partner and share in the time learning about each other.
9. Create Some Art
Get some paint, finger paints, crayons, whatever works for you and let your creative juices flow together.
10. Have a Spa Night
Turn down the lights and give each other massages with your favorite lotion or coconut oil.
Plan out a night at least once a week to spend as your date night. Put it on your calendar if you need to and make a habit out of doing it. Even if you are both exhausted, putting in the effort to spend a some quality time together (even if it is only for half an hour) for stay at home date nights will help you feel connected with your partner. Best of all, no babysitter is needed!
